Gender systems are constructed by the gender roles, identity, and and ideologies of the people in a society. What we know about the Maya gender system comes from pictures and texts on stelae, ceramic figures and pottery, skeletal analysis, and house remnant structures (Brumfield); along with that we also have records of Maya society and life from the Spanish. It is important to use these different facets when studying the importance women played in society. I would specifically like to focus on what women meant in religious and political contexts.
